Black Owned Businesses to Support in the Triangle

Doulas of Raleigh believes that Black Lives Matter.

We understand that white privilege exists.

We know that in order to be an ally we must constantly learn and grow and sit in uncomfortable truths about ourselves and about this country. We also understand that this is not the time to center white experiences or talk over the voices of the black community that are fighting so hard to be heard right now.

There are a lot of people looking for ways to get involved and take action. One tangible way we can do this is by supporting and spending our money with black owned businesses.

So for this week’s blog we would like to highlight some local, black owned businesses. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but it’s a place to start.

Food & Dining

True Flavors Diner - Durham

One of my favorite brunch spots, there are now several locations in Durham. Their chicken and waffles or the duck hash cannot be beat. Make sure you come HUNGRY because the portion sizes are enormous.

Your Pie - Cary

We know that Your Pie is a franchise, but the Cary location is black-owned. This is a family favorite of ours - the kids enjoy watching their pizzas get made right before their very eyes and we love that the Kids’ Meal comes with a gelato for dessert. And it’s always delicious!

Dame’s Chicken & Waffles - Durham and Cary

The self-proclaimed “almost world famous” chicken and waffles have reached cult status here in the Triangle. If you have never sampled the culinary delight that is chicken and waffles, you need to take a trip to Dame’s ASAP. You will not be disappointed.

The Fish House - Apex

Next time you’re looking for fresh fish or seafood, a trip to Apex will definitely be worth your while. Depending on what is in season and fresh, you can find anything from tuna and salmon and mackerel to oysters and scallops and crab. The customer service here is top-notch!

Jeddah’s Tea - Durham

If you have a tea-drinker in your life, you have to visit Jeddah’s Tearoom. From tea accessories to loose leaf teas, it has everything. You can place an online order and swing by for pickup or have it delivered if you’re in range.

The Kupcake Fairy - Morrisville

I have driven by this unassuming little shop off of Chapel Hill Rd. numerous times without having any idea of what goodness awaited inside. That is until I scoped out their website. My husband’s birthday is next week and I am ordering cupcakes and mini-pound cakes from here to celebrate. I can’t wait.

Shopping & Home

The Zen Succulent - Durham and Raleigh

With two locations (one conveniently right around the corner from the Doulas of Raleigh office - sorry wallet!), there’s no excuse not to check out this cute little shop. There are plants and planters galore, workshops from things like flower arranging to macrame, and even opportunities to host private classes. The self-proclaimed plant lady in me goes bonkers for this place!

Cute Buttons - Gift and Paper Boutique - Morrisville

If you know me, you know that I love a good paper planner or a nice, fancy pen, or a beautiful stationery set. So then you have to know that I love this store! From wedding invitations to beautiful cards for all events, this shop has you covered. They also have a great collection of unique and artistic home and office decor. I’m a sucker for a good scented candle. Take my money!

Cocolene Natural and Organic Products - Raleigh

Created by a local mom looking for natural solutions for her daughter’s skincare, Cocolene is an all-natural skin care and beauty line. With all of the constant hand washing I have been doing, I am super excited to try out the 3 balm sampler set I ordered.

Health & Fitness

The Fitness Momshell - Raleigh

Kelly Collins is not only a full-spectrum doula serving families in the Triangle, she is also a Zumba instructor and fitness coach, specializing in postpartum fitness. Kelly has a passion for health and you should most definitely check out her weekly Zumba classes.

Other

The Little Gym - Cary

Looking for a fun place to take your little one? The Cary location of The Little Gym franchise is a Doulas of Raleigh client favorite. From classes to camps to fun virtual options, this is a great option for some active, developmentally appropriate play.

We know there are sooooo many more amazing black owned businesses all over the Triangle. Tell us about your favorite in the comments.
