Top 5 Reasons Why You Should Have Two Doulas
It takes twooooo baby…it takes twoooo baby…..for me and you…..it takes two….two doulas that is! Doulas of Raleigh always pairs labor clients up with a team of two labor doulas. Read on to find out some of the reasons why having two doulas on your birth team is better than having one doula.
1. 24/7 Availability
If you hire Doulas of Raleigh for your labor support, your doula team goes on call for you immediately. While no one plans for their baby to come several weeks, or even sometimes a couple of months, early, it does occasionally happen. Sometimes, your baby doesn’t come until a couple of weeks after your due date. No matter what the circumstances, your doula team is at the ready to support you whenever your baby comes.
2. You Always Have a Built In Back Up Doula
Sometimes folks get sick, or, their kids get sick. Sometimes people have a family emergency. Sometimes, more than one baby decides to come at the same time. That’s ok! All of our clients have 2 labor doulas. These labor doulas do two in-person prenatal meetings with clients and they do them together. This way everyone is hearing all the same things at the same time and gives everyone a chance to develop a rapport with each other. So, if any of the above-mentioned scenarios happen, no big deal! The other doula from your team will support you. That way it is always going to be someone who is familiar with you and your partner and your preferences and not a total stranger filling in to support you.
3. Relief for longer labors
Some labors are just a few hours long. Some labors are a few days long. It’s possible that your doula may be with you for over 24 hours. If this happens and you still have some laboring to do, your doula may switch out with the other doula from your team. This helps you have some new energy and new ideas in the labor room and it allows your other doula to go home and get some rest. That way you still have continuous, in-person support, no matter the length of your labor.
4. Two heads are better than one
Doulas are amazing but they are also just fellow humans. Sometimes you might be experiencing something that one of your doulas is not familiar with. It is likely. however, that at least one of the doulas on your team is familiar with it. If it seems like your labor isn’t progressing well, sometimes your doulas can bounce ideas of each other for things to try.
5. Extra moral support
While you may have hired your doula team for support during your labor and birth, that’s not all they can do! Remember how we said they are on call for you 24/7 from the moment you sign your contract? It’s true! If you are struggling with morning sickness in week 14, your doulas may have some good suggestions for you. If you are having some hip pain in week 24, your doula team may be able to recommend some stretches for you or just reassure you that what you are experiencing is normal. They will also let you know if you should call your care provider. We like to say that your doula team is a little bit like having Human Google at the ready. Your doula team can also recommend mental health resources, prenatal yoga classes, childbirth education classes, and chiropracters who are trained in working with pregnant folks. Of course, if you just need to vent to someone about how you can’t get comfortable at night, they are there for that, too! Doulas are amazing empathizers.
