Why Should I Take a Childbirth Class?

Your sister took a 12 week long childbirth class while your best friend didn’t take any class at all. Both of them tell you their way is the right way. Everyone from the hospital to Instagram influencers are telling you what they think is the right way to give birth while all you want to know is what will contractions feel like, how can your partner help you, and when should you go the hospital. Good news….you can learn all that and more in one of our childbirth education classes. Read on to find out why you should take a childbirth class with Doulas of Raleigh.

Reduce Fear

Taking our childbirth class will help you learn signs of labor, what to do when your water breaks, what each stage of labor looks like both physically and emotionally, and know what to expect when you arrive at the hospital. If you know more about what to expect, you will be less fearful of labor and more confident about having your baby. If you are not afraid, you will be less tense and able to relax your body through contractions. As the saying goes, knowledge is power!

Knowledge for your partner

Speaking of knowledge, taking a class will also benefit your partner. If you have never had a baby before, your partner may be very concerned about you when you are in labor if they don’t have any information about what typical labor might look like. If they know about the stages of labor and what to expect they can be a better birth partner for you. They can learn how to time contractions and what to do when your water breaks. They’ll also learn ways to help you feel more comfortable as well as learn a few positions they can help you do to help facilitate the labor process. One of the most valuable things that can help you during labor is an informed birth partner.

Know your options

You may not know what is available to you in labor. Our childbirth education class will give you an overview of what is typical when you arrive at the hospital up until the first hour after your baby is born. Our class talks about pain medication options at area hospitals along with at least 30 comfort measures. You’ll find out options for fetal monitoring and options for your own positioning during labor. You also may hear about common interventions during labor. You’ll also learn about the acronym B.R.A.I.N as a tool to help you ask questions to the medical staff caring for you. This will give you the information you need to have any needed discussions with your care provider when making decisions about your labor and birth.
